The journey
Botswana keeps its wilderness quiet by keeping numbers low: small camps, large private concessions and no tarred roads into the Delta. You travel between camps by light aircraft, watching the floodplains spread out below like hammered silver. - 01Okavango Delta · 3 nights
The Delta at water level
Glide through papyrus channels in a mokoro poled by a local guide, listen for reed frogs at dusk and drive out to the islands where lion and leopard hunt.
- 02Linyanti · 3 nights
Elephants on the river
In the dry season hundreds of elephants come down to the Linyanti to drink and swim. Watch from a sunken hide at eye level, or from a boat as they cross at sunset.
- 03Makgadikgadi · 3 nights
The salt pans
Walk with San trackers, sit among habituated meerkats and sleep out on the open pan under more stars than seems reasonable.

Doors-off flight
A helicopter flight with the doors removed over the Okavango, low enough to see buffalo herds and the trails they leave through the water.
